A survey has revealed that over the last three years, a total of £7.4 million has been paid out by 35 of the 44 police forces located across England and Wales. With the addition of legal costs and other factors, the bill would total at £18.7million. The survey found that Police forces are settling over 400 compensation cases a year, with claims ranging from driving injuries to insect bites.
Compensation claims included:
- £2,040 to a civilian employee in Surrey who had a notice board fall on their foot
- £5,000 to another that claimed their headset caused ringing in their ears and deafness
- £3,250 to an officer in Cumbria who was injured on a driving course
- £2,000, and £26,290 legal fees, to an officer in Surrey who was injured on a training course
- £1,500 to an officer in South Yorkshire who bruised his hand after it was closed in a van door
- £2,500 to another that injured his back while loading bricks onto his vehicle
Some argue that there needs to be a crackdown on police officers who are exploiting their position by making trivial claims, while a Police Federation spokesman said policing carries a significant risk of injury. He said: “While officers accept that risk as part of the job it is only right that they should be offered the same protection as anyone else who might be injured while at work.”
